“I watched you watching me fumble with my ticket stub—the one that said Longyearbyen. I wondered upon first hearing of this city if the name was a hybrid, Norwegian and English, for what it feels like to live here in the winter and then summer extremes. Somehow the days go on forever while the nights meet the opposite end in an eternal midnight. You transfer back and forth between this often. How fitting to have met you on a plane that day. Your homes bury you in isolation and Longyear actually dug holes.”
